Four Tips for Studying for Your Real Estate Exam
Studying for your realtor exam doesn’t always look like the quiet, color-coded approach you see online. If you’ve ever stared at a page for an hour only to realize you don’t remember a single thing you just read, you’re not alone, and you’re not doing anything wrong. You just may need a study method that actually engages your brain.
Here are a few study tips worth trying out so that you can feel more confident walking into your real estate exam.
Write, Then Rewrite
We’re not talking about just the Cornell Notes method or mind-mapping here. Writing notes down has been consistently shown to be one of the most effective ways to memorize material, particularly when compared to typing. Instead of highlighting material from your reading material, write it down, even if that’s on a whiteboard or your iPad. It’s not the medium, it’s the act of actually engaging your body as you’re trying to commit the material to memory.
Motion is so helpful that even doodling or scribbling while reviewing the material can aid in retaining the information.
Keep Your Surroundings Fresh
Don’t stay cooped up in your apartment or dorm room while you’re studying for your real estate license. Get out and about! Establish a routine for your brain. Dress nice, but comfortable, and head out to somewhere other than your home to give yourself a break from the monotony and signal to your brain that it’s time to begin an activity.
If you enjoy coffee shops, try a new one each time you go out. Alternatively, utilize resources available at your local library, such as dedicated study rooms. Even if you’re not a college student, your local college campus may have spaces you can use as well. If the weather’s nice, take advantage of your laptop and a good picnic table at your local park’s pavilion.
Make Use of Online Videos
Your textbooks are an excellent resource, but they’re not the definitive way to study. Most people learn more effectively when they receive information through multiple modes of communication. Online video libraries like YouTube can be great resources for a wealth of other professionals and students like yourself who are in a similar situation.
When you need a little encouragement, it’s reassuring to see others who have gone through the exams before. You might also find some inspiration by seeing someone share their experience as a licensed real estate agent.
Build a Support Team
Social media can be a great way to find others who are studying for their real estate license. You can also find organizations made up of real estate professionals who not only have gone through licensing just like you, but have a track record for helping real estate students pass their exams with confidence.
